NASSAU, BAHAMAS – The Commonwealth Secretariat’s Gender Adviser, Jennifer Namgyal discusses the relationship between religion and gender issues, including the topic of marital rape.

Namgyal, visited The Bahamas this week in preparation for the 13th Commonwealth Women’s Affairs Ministers Meeting that will be hosted here in August.

The conferences are designed to discuss equality and gender-based violence issues.

The Davis administration has said marital rape will be addressed in the proposed gender-based violence legislation, but consultation has been ongoing for months as talks are ongoing with religious leaders.

When it comes to the upcoming meetings, Namgyal says shared issues among Commonwealth countries are a perfect example of some of the benefits of the Women’s Affairs Ministers Meetings.
