HAITI – Garry Conille was named Haiti’s new Prime Minister Tuesday, following a nearly month-long delay after a fractured transitional council initially chose someone else.

This decision comes amid ongoing gang violence in Port-Au-Prince, where gangs have been attacking neighborhoods and demolishing police stations and prisons.

Six out of seven voting council members selected Conille, with one member absent.

Conille, currently UNICEF’s regional director for Latin America and the Caribbean, previously served as Haiti’s Prime Minister from 2011 to 2012. He replaces Michel Patrick Boisvert, the interim Prime Minister since Ariel Henry’s resignation in late April.
