HAITI – A Kenyan police officer deployed in Haiti has been killed in a confrontation with gang members, marking the first casualty for the Kenyan-led multinational security support mission (MSS).

Police Constable Samuel Kitwai, was shot during an operation in Pont-Sondé and later died in hospital.

MSS officials called the 26-year-old a “fallen hero” and vowed to pursue the gangs responsible.

Despite reinforcements, the force remains outgunned by gangs armed with weapons reportedly smuggled from the U.S.

The mission’s future remains uncertain as U.S. funding faces political hurdles.
