NASSAU , BAHAMAS – The Bahamas Parks and Beaches Authority is taking its clean beaches push to another part of New Providence.

Crews were out at South Beach recently, as the authority continues efforts to improve the condition of public beaches and keep them that way.

From overgrown areas to litter and the general condition of beach facilities, the Parks and Beaches Authority is looking to give some of the island’s busiest public spaces more attention.

This week, that work brought crews to South Beach, as part of a cleanup campaign that has been moving across New Providence.

Authority Chairman Jamahl Strachan says South Beach is the latest location to be cleaned.

We have the third iteration of our beach cleanup. We would’ve started at Goodman’s Bay, and then we went on to Montagu, and now we’re down at South Beach doing the same restorative efforts that we illustrated on the other two beaches.”

And once the heavy work is done, the challenge becomes keeping those beaches from slipping back into poor condition.

That’s why the authority says it’s moving away from one-off cleanups.

“It’s about continuity, right? So now that we’ve brought out the heavy lifting to give it an overall facelift and good, thorough clean, we’re gonna put them on schedule so that you will see every quarter we kind of go back in and provide that big, heavy lift to ensure that the quality of all the assets remain at our particular high standard.”

And that doesn’t mean every beach will get the same type of attention.

Some locations already have maintenance arrangements in place, so the authority says it will work around those existing systems while making sure the standard is being kept across the island.

“Jaws Beach and more western beaches are already kind of maintained either by other authorities. So we’re just gonna ensure the overall general maintenance of them. And, of course, they would have been put through contracts to assist the contractors with their three- to four-day cleanup throughout the month.”
