NASSAU, BAHAMAS – As Catholics around the world join in a time of remembrance for Pope Francis, The Bahamas is joining in as they signed the book of condolences at the St. Francis Xavier Cathedral Tuesday morning. Government officials and devout Catholics marked the somber moment with kind words for their fallen pope.

Myra Mitchell – Devout Catholic:
“He was inspirational, he was what we needed in this world today for all the different things that are going around, and it really saddens me that he is not here.”

Michelle Mitchell-Lloyd – Director of Stewardship and Annual Appeal, Archdiocese of Nassau:
“He has shown us how to be like Christ and he has never been judgmental, he has always stuck to the word, and that is Jesus’ word.”

Pope Francis died at the age of 88 from heart failure, and his funeral is set for this coming Saturday. When the news broke, tributes poured in from world leaders, including Prime Minister Philip Davis and Housing Minister Keith Bell, who himself is a devout Catholic.

Prime Minister Philip Davis:
“No doubt he truly lived what I call a Christ-like life.”

Keith Bell – Minister, Housing and Urban Renewal:
“I’ll always remember his famous words which remain: one who has mercy does not fear death, and those words resonate with me during his passing.”

Free National Movement leader Michael Pintard also paid his respects.

Michael Pintard – Leader, Free National Movement:
“His faith was evident not only in his public pronouncements but the increased involvement of the Catholic community in negotiations around the world, fighting for peace in particular.”

Marie Mitchell-Rodgers – Devout Catholic:
“Be the face of Jesus wherever you are. If you see somebody in need, help where you can.”

Michelle Mitchell-Lloyd – Devout Catholic:
“If we read and follow his word as well as the word of Jesus throughout the Bible, then we will be well on our way to continuing the legacy of what it is to be a Christian.”
