NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Over the weekend, the Ministry of Agriculture and Marine Resources paid homage to the dedicated men and women in the fisheries industry.

Dozens came out dressed in their best to celebrate the inaugural event as Baha Mar’s Convention Center was transformed for the first-ever Anchor Awards.

Guests were met with a striking red carpet, balloons and of course an anchor.

Chairwoman of the event Kendea Smith says the fishing industry is a big deal and can sometimes be overlooked.

To change that, the ministry along with several sponsors invited  fishermen from across the archipelago to attend and give them much due flowers and more.

The inaugural event honored men and women in categories like Bahamas the Marine Exporter Association Award, the Minister’s Award, and People’s Choice Fisher of the Year just to name a few.

We spoke to a few of the award recipients and they all had this common line ” I did not expect to win.”

With a room filled with diplomats, government officials, family and friends our local fishermen received a night of recognition that I’m sure will be lodged in their memories for eternity.
