NASSAU, BAHAMAS – The Ministry of Agriculture, Marine Resources and Family Island Affairs issuing a response to this morning’s dog attack that resulted in the death of man.

According to the statement, officials of the Animal Control Unit were on scene and are working closely with police to determine if negligence played a part in the incident.

Under the Animal Protection and Control Act, 2010, the government is seeking to ensure that the Animal Control Board mandates that pet owners provide proper animal care, animal behaviour, animal welfare and proper housing of aggressive animals.

The statement further notes that the animal control unit is integral in the enforcement of the act, specifically the issuance of dog licenses for all dogs over 3 months old, attending to animal attack cases and animal breeder facility inspections.

The ministry is admonishing animal owners to keep them in a safe and enclosed area to prevent future incidents such as this.
