NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Divers and boaters are advised to stay away from the area where the MV Onego Traveller is sinking in Abaco, as the Ministry of Transport and Housing works to protect the marine environment from further damage.

The Ministry of Transport issuing a statement, noting that it is working to ensure salvage operations of the MV Onego Traveller off Abaco, are conducted in a safe manner and without destroying the marine environment.

Transport, along with the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, the Department of Planning and Protection, Environmental Health Services and the Port Department, are working together, after the vessel began taking on water near Hole in the Wall, Abaco last month.

The ministry says it receives daily progress reports from Resolve Marine, the company overseeing the salvage operations.

So far, the ship’s cargo remains submerged and consists of 3,119 tons of steel coins and 4,505 tons of Ferix bulk.

The statement adds that divers continue to inspect the sunken vessel and booms remain in place to hold the vessel.

Efforts to remove fuel are also ongoing.
