NASSAU , BAHAMAS – An altercation at a popular bar and grill on Saturday afternoon ended with an off duty police officer, firing a fatal shot.

Our Denielle Miller was on the scene and gives us these details.

Police and media were alerted to a police-involved shooting on West Bay Street, near Da Plantation Bar & Grill, Saturday evening.

Upon our arrival, shortly after 6pm, we observed a body lying on the ground next to what appeared to be a utility truck, located outside of the restaurant.

As police conducted their initial investigations, patrons arriving at the restaurant were turned away.

Police, only permitted residents of the adjacent complex to enter.

After nearly two hours at the scene, Press Liaison Chief Superintendent, Sheria King provided an update.

Chief Supt. Sheria King – Press Liaison, RBPF

“Shortly before this evening an off duty officer was at a local establishment off West Bay Street when an altercation occurred that continued on the outside of that establishment one of the males in that altercation got into his vehicle the officer felt like the vehicle was coming at him in a threatening manner he then fired one shot fatally wounding the driver of that vehicle.”

We asked the chief superintendent if the victim was an employee of the Pike corporation.

However, she did not verify, only confirming that the officer in question is a senior officer.

King added that any further action regarding that senior officer will be determined by the Commissioner of Police.

Chief Supt. Sheria King – Press Liaison, RBPF

“Will the officer remain on duty while this investigation is going on? Again that is a decision for the commissioner of police I can not speak to that at this time”

“Moments after police officers cleared the scene the restaurant opened its doors and welcomed customers. C.E.O of Da Plantation Bar & Grill, Dwayne Bassett says he was advised the incident happened outside of the restaurant therefore operations can continue as usual “

Dwayne Bassett – CEO, Da Plantation Bar & Grill

“We are still open for business because like I said the incident did happen outside parking lot between two individuals so directly affecting the business inside that’s inside.”)
