NASSAU, BAHAMAS – A well-known pastor is questioning where the term marital rape came from as he believes it doesn’t exist. He says the way it’s being handled will destroy families.

Great Commission Ministries Senior Pastor Bishop Walter Hanchell tackling the controversial issue of marital rape head on, Thursday morning.

He likened a man who rapes his wife to an animal but says he doesn’t believe a married person has the right to withhold his or her body from their spouse.

The issue of marital rape, is one that’s been the source of controversy as government has a bill out for consultation to establish marital rape as a sexual offence.

Bishop Hanchell says anyone who abuses his wife should be charged with assault and not rape, adding the way it’s being framed will destroy families.

Christian Council President Bishop Delton Fernander has said the church is split on the issue.

The government has come under criticism, with some claiming the church has too much say on the proposed legislation.
