NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Speculation about a possible early general election is gaining traction following comments from Free National Movement Leader Michael Pintard, who suggested the Davis Administration might call an election as early as September.

But Progressive Liberal Party Chairman Fred Mitchell is rejecting the claims, labeling them as nothing more than political theatrics.

Mitchell clarified:
“The election is not due until five years after the date of the first meeting of the House of Assembly.”

Fred Mitchell – Chairman, Progressive Liberal Party:
“Only one man knows that, and there’s been no indication from the man who has the authority and power to do so that there’s any contemplation or otherwise.”

Pintard also reignited calls for fixed election dates, claiming it would bring greater transparency to the political process.

Mitchell says that would require constitutional reforms, something not currently on the table.

Fred Mitchell – Chairman, Progressive Liberal Party:
“In order to change to fixed dates of elections, uh, you need to have constitutional reform. Uh, at this point, uh, no one is contemplating going back to the country with a referendum on any, uh, issues of that nature.
And so, uh, fixed dates of election, while sounds nice and all the rest of it within the present system, uh, it’s not possible.”

The FNM leader also criticized the government for what Pintard calls stalled projects. But despite the noise in the market, Mitchell says the Davis-led government is delivering.

Fred Mitchell – Chairman, Progressive Liberal Party:
“Show us your record and show us the record, uh, that we have. Uh, we know that we have built houses, put people in houses. We finished the buildings that, uh, we left when we were, uh, unceremoniously, um, uh, dispatched from office in 2017. When we came back, they hadn’t finished the projects that we left. We’ve gone about finishing them.”

Mitchell, standing by his party, says the government is currently working on unfinished tasks.

And when the next election is called, he hopes that Bahamians will once again vote in the PLP’s favor.

Fred Mitchell – Chairman, Progressive Liberal Party:
“We need more time to do whatever is left to be accomplished. Uh, and, uh, we believe that the Bahamian public, in their, uh, wisdom, will choose to continue, uh, the stable governance which they’ve had over the last, uh, four years.”
