NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Another first for women in law enforcement, months after we saw the first woman Commissioner of police, the Royal Bahamas Defence Force has appointed its first woman deputy commander. Natasha Miller has served more than three decades on the force and shared her main focus for her journey ahead.

The Royal Bahamas Defence Force has a new commodore and with him comes two new firsts. It’s the first time the force will have two deputy commanders and the first time the force will see a woman deputy commander.

Natasha Miller has served 32 years on the Royal Bahamas Defence Force and she says the position came with a lot of commitment, dedication and hardwork.

She believes that without discipline, the force will not thrive.

But, this isn’t the first time Miller has broken the glass ceiling. In January of 2024, she was one of only two women to achieve the highest ranks to be held by women since 1985, when she was promoted to captain.

She says this new role as commander shows that gender has no barrier.

As the first woman in the role of commander, Miller admitted that there have been women before her who could’ve risen to the rank but weren’t given the opportunity.

She’s hoping women following her footsteps would be committed, integral, and have great leadership skills.
