Willis Mackey Jr. Takes Up Assistant Coaching Job

U.S.A. – Willis Mackey Jr. joins the growing list of former national basketball team players to get an early start in coaching.

Mackey will join the staff of Chipola College as an assistant coach for the upcoming fall campaign.

Chipola is a junior college powerhouse that has won two consecutive conference championships and has made three consecutive appearances in the NJCAA tournament.

Several Bahamian players have played at Chipola in recent years including Valerie Nesbitt, Paul Greene, and Deyton Albury.

Mackey graduated from the University of Northwestern Ohio in Lima, Ohio and spent five seasons playing professionally in spain and France.

Over the last few years, Mackey has been a regular for the senior men’s national team. He appeared at the FIBA Americup qualifiers, World Cup Pre Qualifiers and and World Cup qualifiers.

At last month’s FIBA Olympic qualifier, he served as the video coordinator for Team Bahamas, a role that prepared him for the next step in his career.

After day one at the World Clubs Tournament in France, Team Bahamas sits third in the standings.

The team of Katerina Coello, Emma Johnston, Ella Saidi and Sienna Tinker trail only China and France at the event in lamotte-beuvron, France. 

Participating teams also include Belgium, Chile, Italy, Malta, Czech Republic, and Turkey.

Rai Burch is the head coach of Team Bahamas.

Baseball

The hits keep coming for Jazz Chisholm.

Chisholm went 2-4 with a double and two rbi in his Miami marlins’ 6-3 series opening win over the Baltimore Orioles Tuesday night at Loan Depot Park in Miami.

In the second inning, he laced a two rbi double that gave the Marlins an early 4-1 lead.

He also recorded two stolen bases. Chisholm had another highlight defensively when he made a throw from center field that caught colton cowser at third on a ryan mountcastle single.

Only four players in the MLB have more than 13 home runs and 21 stolen bases – Shohei Ohtani, Elly de la Cruz, Bobby Witt and Jazz Chisholm.

Despite his production, the narrative in the American media paints the picture of a lukewarm trade market for Chisholm thus far.

Miami is in last place in the national league east at 36-65.
