NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Six Jamaican men responsible for a large scale marijuana-growing operation in North Andros have been jailed for two-and-a-half years.

Leroy Douglas, Walford Reid, Jermaine Jones, Devon Simpson, Bruce Palmer, and Everton Palmer will spend an additional six months in custody if they don’t pay a fine of $7,500 before the conclusion of their sentence.

Officers from the Drug Enforcement Unit watched the men tending to the field for two days before they descended on their home on August 14, while armed with a search warrant.

While executing a search warrant, the officers found four grams of marijuana, worth $20, in a bedroom.

That’s when Douglas volunteered, “Officer, I can’t tell you no lie. All of us was in the field growing marijuana plants. I know why y’all here.”

Douglas then took the officers to the farm.

The officers seized 25,000 marijuana plants and 20,000 seedlings.

According to police, the seized plants would have yielded marijuana worth $2.5 million.

The men, who did not have lawyers, pleaded guilty to charges of conspiracy to possess dangerous drugs, possession of dangerous drugs with intent to supply, and cultivation of dangerous drugs at their arraignment before Magistrate Samuel McKinney.

They were also fined $250 for the four grams of marijuana found inside their home. Failing to pay the fine will result in a default sentence of one month in prison.
