NASSAU, BAHAMAS – The second day of the B.A.I.S.S. basketball playoffs was a day of celebration for the St. John’s College Giants.
In the senior boys division, the top seeded Giants concluded the night with a route of the C.W. Saunders Cougars, 65-40.
Leonardo Rolle led the Giants with a game high 24 points, including 10 in the second quarter while new addition Joshua Russell scored 10.
In junior boys play, the Giants look to defend their title with a new cast of characters.
They advanced to the final with a 36-28 win over the St. Augustine’s College Big Red Machine.
Deandre Baker scored seven of his team high 11 points in the fourth quarter and Kayden Deveaux added 10 points.
The Giants junior girls defeated the Queen’s College Comets 39-6.
Azariah Duncombe led the giants with 10 points, while Danica Simmons, Zuri Hanna and Melodi Ferguson each scored six.
The Kingsway Academy Saints advanced to the championship in the senior girls division with the most lopsided win of the playoffs so far.
They defeated the Jordan Prince William Falcons 53-7.
Andica Curtis scored 24 points, D’shante Sears scored 15 and Michayla Joseph added nine.
The championship matchups are all set and the Giants have teams in all four championship series Monday at the Kendal Isaacs Gymnasium.
The junior girls will take on C.W. Saunders, junior boys will face Jordan Prince William, senior girls will face Kingsway Academy and the senior boys will take on Queen’s College.
NBA
While the Golden State Warriors were making deals, Buddy Hield found the shooting touch Wednesday night.
Hield scored 18 points and made 4-8 three pointers but his Golden State Warriors lost 131-128 to the Utah Jazz at the Delta Center in Utah.
Hield was scoring just under 10 points per game through December and January.
On the season, Hield is averaging 11.7 points and shooting 37 percent from three point range.
Track & Field
Devynne Charlton made history at the Millrose Games in 2024, this year the 60mH world record holder is back alongside another Bahamian Olympian.
Charlton and new world leader in the event, Denisha Cartwright will take on a star studded field at the armory in New York on February 8.
Cartwright ran the leading time of 7.78 seconds in her pro debut last weekend.
The event will also feature athletes with four of the top 13 times on the world athletics top list this season.
100m Olympic gold medalist Masai Russell and Grace Stark of the United States come into the event with the second and third fastest times this season at 7.80 and 7.81 respectively.
Charlton is currently fourth on the top list at 7.85 seconds.
American Christine Clemons is also in the field with a season’s best 7.98 seconds.
In 2024, Charlton set the world record for the first time at the 116th Millrose Games with her time of 7.67 seconds.
