UNITED STATES – Javelin thrower Keyshawn Strachan added another major achievement to his collegiate career Thursday night, capturing the silver medal in the men’s javelin at the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Oregon.

A senior for the Nebraska Cornhuskers, Strachan recorded a throw of 80.65m (264 feet, 7 inches) to finish second in the nation and earn First-Team All-America honors.

Fellow Bahamian Kaiden Cartwright, a freshman at Mississippi State, finished 19th in the competition with a throw of 68.02m.

Strachan entered the national championships following an outstanding season for the Cornhuskers.

Earlier this year, he set a Nebraska school record with a throw of 81.86m (268-7), a mark that ranked among the best in the NCAA. He also claimed the Big Ten Conference title with a throw of 79.36m and established himself as one of the premier javelin throwers in collegiate track and field.

Prior to this season, Strachan finished fifth at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in both 2024 and 2025.

His personal best stands at 84.27m (276-6), recorded at the Texas Relays in 2023.

Track and field

The Bahamas Association of Athletic Associations has placed significant importance on its upcoming Combined Junior and Senior National Track and Field Championships and Invitational, scheduled for June 19-21 at the Original Thomas A. Robinson Track and Field Stadium.

With a busy international season ahead, the meet will serve as a critical evaluation opportunity for athletes seeking national team selection and financial support from the federation.

The BAAA has advised that all athletes currently receiving subvention, those seeking to be added to the subvention program, and athletes wishing to be considered for future national team selection must compete at the combined nationals.

The championships come as the federation prepares to finalize teams for a number of upcoming international competitions, including the NACAC Under-18 and Under-23 Championships, the World Athletics Under-20 Championships, the CAC Games, the Commonwealth Games and the inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championships.

For athletes targeting the NACAC U18 and U23 Championships in Apizaco, Mexico, from July 10-12, the combined nationals will serve as the final opportunity to demonstrate fitness and readiness for selection. Athletes under consideration for those teams would have previously qualified through their performances at the CARIFTA Games in Grenada.

The federation noted that while the combined nationals is not a qualifying meet for the CAC Games, Commonwealth Games or World Athletics Ultimate Championships, participation remains mandatory for athletes receiving or seeking federation support and for those wishing to remain under consideration for future national teams.

2026/27 Budget Debate

Sports tourism, athlete development and sporting infrastructure emerged as the biggest winners in the Ministry of Youth and Sports’ 2026/27 budget allocation, according to Minister Mario Bowleg’s contribution to the budget debate in the House of Assembly.

The largest allocation announced was $5.584 million for the ministry’s newly branded Sports in Paradise initiative, formerly known as Sports Tourism. Bowleg said the funding will support efforts to attract international sporting events, training camps, tournaments, clinics and conferences while creating economic opportunities for Bahamian businesses and communities.

The National Sports Authority received an allocation of $4.45 million to support the management and upkeep of sporting facilities throughout the country, while the National Sports Endowment was allocated $2.5 million to continue supporting the development of athletes, federations and sporting programs.

Support for high-performance athletes also saw a boost, with the government increasing its elite athlete subvention to $2.025 million.

Bahamian national record holder Serena Brown is already rewriting the record books just three meets into the 2026 season.

Brown produced a throw of 61.26 meters (201 feet) at the 2026 Oklahoma Throws Series at Millican Field in Ramona, Oklahoma, to establish a new Bahamian national record in the women’s discus.

The mark surpasses her previous national record of 60.92m (199 feet, 10 inches), which she set at the 2021 Blue Marlin Track and Field Series at the Thomas A. Robinson National Stadium.

The performance continues an impressive comeback for Brown, who returned to competition after stepping away from the sport for five years.

The throw marks the first time Brown has eclipsed the 61-meter barrier in competition and provides another indication that she could continue pushing the national record even further as the season progresses.
