NASSAU, BAHAMAS – September is recognized as Suicide Prevention Month, with the goal of reducing stigma, raising awareness, and promoting prevention.

The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) reports that an average of 100,000 people in the Americas commit suicide annually, with roughly 2 million attempts. Dr. Eldonna Boisson, PAHO/WHO Representative for The Bahamas and Turks & Caicos, emphasizes the importance of communication and limiting the means of suicide as key prevention strategies.

“It’s important that the community comes together to eradicate the stigma surrounding suicide and promote open conversations about mental health.”

This year’s theme is “Changing the Narrative,” encouraging a collective effort to change the way society addresses suicide and mental health.
