PARAMARIBO, SURINAME – Suriname’s Foreign Minister Albert Ramdin was on Monday elected as the first Caribbean secretary general of the organization of American states (OAS), set to serve through 2030.

Ramdin, who previously held the role of Assistant Secretary General, has been a key advocate for greater efficiency within the OAS and stronger support for Haiti.

Suriname’s government called his election a historic moment and praised Ramdin’s steady leadership.
