Team Bahamas Lands In Grenada for CARIFTA Competition

GRENADA – The Bahamas has fielded a team of 77 athletes, to participate in the 51st edition of the CARIFTA Games, March 30 to April 1st at the Kirani James Stadium in St. George’s, Grenada.

GRENADA – The Bahamas has fielded a team of 77 athletes, to participate in the 51st edition of the CARIFTA Games, March 30 to April 1st at the Kirani James Stadium in St. George’s, Grenada.

The team had their final practice sessions Wednesday prior to Thursday’s departure.

In 2023, The Bahamas finished second as hosts with 10 gold and a total 46 of medals overall.

The team  includes several CARIFTA veterans and returning medalists from 2023.

The team will be coached by Caudell McNabb assisted by James Rolle, Laquel Harrris, Alexis Roberts, Branson Rolle, and Kenny Moxey Sr. 

Sophia Higgs is the team manager.

The last time CARIFTA was hosted in Grenada in 2016 when The Bahamas won a total of 33 medals – five gold medals, 15 silver, and 13 bronze.

Junior College Basketball

The junior college Division I Tournament run continued for one Bahamian player but ended for another after Wednesday night’s quarterifinals.

Brent Moss and the Barton Community College Cougars defeated northwest Florida State College 87-73 to advance to the semifinals.

Moss had a team high 18 points and 5 rebounds off the bench.

They will take on Indian Hills in the semifinals.

In the round one win over Walter State, Moss posted 13 points and six rebounds.

Valentino Simon and the Hutchinson Blue Dragons were eliminated in the quarterfinals with a 91-69 loss to Connors State.

Simon finished with six points.

Tennis

The Bahamas Lawn Tennis Association hosted some of the top junior players in the country at the fidelity spring classic.

The Mactaggart Brothers won 3 of the 4 boys divisions. Jackson Mactaggart won both the under-16 and under-18 boys while patrick mactaggart won the under-14 boys title.

Kingston rees claimed the boys title, the under-12.

Brianna Houlgrave also won two divisions,  the under-14 and under-16 girls.

Marina Bostwick survived a three set battle  to claim the girls under 12 title while Jalisa Clarke won the girls under 18 division.

The tournament included players from  New Providence, Abaco, Exuma, Eleuthera, and Grand Bahama.

Basketball

The playoffs are underway for Jonquel Jones and Inner Mongolia in the Women’s Chinese Basketball Association (WCBA).

Recently named the league’s International Player of the Year, Jones posted 24 points and 12 rebounds in their 98-75 win over Shandong Wednesday night.

They will advance to the semifinals with a game two win Friday night.

Jones has averaged 23.5 points, 12.3 rebounds, and 3.8 assists per game this season in the WCBA.

Track & Field

Ahead of the World Athletics Relays, we’ll get a first look at some possible combinations for Team Bahamas as the outdoor season begins.

The Bahamas will field both men and women 4×100 meter relay teams to compete this weekend at the Florida Relays.

The men’s 4×100 meter team includes Ian Kerr, Joel Johnson, Samson Colebrooke, Taryll Thompson, and Yurick Dean.

The women’s 4×100 meter team includes Charisma Taylor, Printassia Johnson, Brianne Bethel, Camile Rutherford, and Phebe Thompson.

Tyrone Burrows and Pauline Davis-Thompson will serve as coaches.
