NASSAU, BAHAMAS – As our Jasmin Brown tells us in this report, the hours-long event combines centuries-old ceremony, royally-inspired pageantry, and constitutional tradition.

On Wednesday, hundreds of Bahamians, tourists and party supporters are expected to flood Bay Street to witness the pomp and pageantry of the Opening of Parliament.

It’s an event that plays an important role in the country’s legislative makeup, marking the commencement of a new session.

On the big day, Parliament and Rawson Squares will be transformed into a vibrant display of centuries-old political tradition for the ceremonial event.

The historic occasion features the highly anticipated speech from the throne, which will be delivered by Governor-General Dame Cynthia Pratt.

There is also the colorful inspection of the guard, but it’s the entrance of the prime minister, leader of the opposition, cabinet ministers, MPs, and senators dressed in their finest that remains the most anticipated feature of the event.

41 members of Parliament will take their Oaths of Allegiance and qualification, and 16 senators, who recently received their instruments of appointment, will be sworn in the upper chamber.

While the much-anticipated event happens in the heart of downtown New Providence, there was a break from tradition in 2021, when the Davis administration moved the opening to the Baha Mar Convention Center.

However, one thing is clear, no matter its location, it’s always a highly anticipated and attended event.
