In 1895, Cuban revolutionary José Martí arrived in Great Inagua, where he met with fellow Cubans supporting the fight for independence from Spain. During his two-week stay, he befriended Captain Heinrich Lowe of the steamship Nordstrand and bribed him to transport him and his comrades back to Cuba on April 10. Martí was killed two months later in the Battle of Dos Ríos on May 19, 1895.

In 1957, Oswald Arthur Raynor was appointed governor of the Bahama Islands.

In 2007, the Nassau Airport Development Company (NAD) took over commercial operations at Lynden Pindling International Airport (LPIA) in Nassau.

On April 1, 2019, at Grand Bahama Shipyard, a crane collapsed onto the Royal Caribbean cruise ship Oasis of the Seas, injuring eight people.

In 2020, The Bahamas recorded its first COVID-19 death, with confirmed cases rising to 21 at the time.
