NASSAU, BAHAMAS – On this day in Bahamian history the Daily Tribune reported on the reprieve then British Prime Minister Winston Churchill took in New Providence in 1932.

Weeks before, Churchill had an accident while in New York on a speaking tour. The paper reported he had come to Nassau to recover his health and strength.

Eight years later in 1940, James Catalyn was born in Nassau. Catalyn was a writer, actor, producer and director. Hailed as a Bahamian cultural, legend, icon and warrior, Catelyn passed away on August 18, 2018.

He was 78 years old.

In 2003 Sir Gerald Christopher Cash – lawyer, politician, former member of parliament and former Governor General – died in Nassau.

Cash, who suffered a stroke six days prior to his death, was 85.

His legal and political career spanned almost 50 years, culminated in his service as Governor General from 1979 – 1986. Ten years later, Flamingo Gardens Primary School was renamed in his honor.
