Death of Woodes Rogers

On this day in Bahamian history, in 1732, Woodes Rogers, the first royal governor of The Bahamas, died in Nassau. Serving two terms (1718-1721, 1728-1732), he expelled pirates and established the House of Assembly in 1729. He died one year after returning from a health retreat in Charleston.

Passing of Kevan “Kevi Kev” McKenzie

In 2013, Kevan “Kevi Kev” McKenzie, a prominent Bahamian gospel singer, passed away at 51 after battling colon cancer. Known for his contributions to gospel music, McKenzie released his first album in the 1980s.

Honoring Bahamian Descendants

On July 15, 2018, five South Floridians of Bahamian descent were honored in Miami for their contributions to the community. The celebration was part of The Bahamas’ 45th Independence anniversary events. Mayor Eric H. Jones, Thelma Gibson, and Garth C. Reeves were among those recognized.

The Bahamas Games 2023

In 2023, The Bahamas Games were held for the first time since 2001, celebrating the 50th year of independence. New Providence won the most medals with 211 in total, while Grand Bahama won the most gold medals, a total of 91.
