NASSAU, BAHAMAS – On this day in Bahamian history, in1817 – the Hog Island Lighthouse, now known as the Paradise Island Lighthouse, became operational.

Then in1979 – Hurricane David hit The Bahamas as a category two hurricane. The storm affected mainly the island of Andros, uprooting trees and causing power outages. No deaths were recorded.

Then in 2012 – the country learned of the passing of legendary local entertainer Terez Hepburn, who died after suffering a stroke the night before. 

She was best known for hits such as ‘Mr. Bus Driver’, performed at venues across The Bahamas.

Then in 2019 – Hurricane Dorian made landfall in The Bahamas. The category five storm was the most powerful to ever strike the country with wind speeds of up to 185 miles per hour.

The hurricane mainly impacted the islands of Abaco and Grand Bahama, remaining at a near standstill for hours before moving again.

Dorian caused major devastation to homes and infrastructure with 74 confirmed deaths. Years later and hundreds are still missing.

And finally in 2021 – then opposition PLP laid out its 10-point action plan to revive the economy at its national summit ahead of the September 16th General Elections.
