NASSAU, BAHAMAS – With 44 murders so far this year and violent crimes continuing to grab headlines, many wonder how has this impacted the healthcare system.

An increase in violent crimes especially victims presenting with gunshot wounds is placing a strain on operations at the Accident and Emergency Unit at the Princess Margaret Hospital, that’s according to Managing Director at the Public Hospitals Authority Dr. Aubynette Rolle.

She says fortunately there is sufficient blood to meet the demands for those who come to receive care and due to the completion of hospital renovations there is now the availability of beds to care for patients.

Health and Wellness Minister, Dr. Michael Darville says violent crime is now considered a public health issue adding that a focus of the wellness unit is addressing mental health issues and conflict resolution.
