NASSAU , BAHAMAS – After an ongoing battle between the U.S. and China over funding for the new specialty hospital in western New Providence, ground was broken last week.

In a statement issued on Sunday, U.S. Ambassador Herschel Walker expressed what he said was vast disappointment, calling the move a rush forward.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs responded, seeking clarification and stating they had reached out to the U.S. years before China.

Residents and business owners are also speaking out, sharing where they stand on the new hospital.

Lillian Laramore-Smith – Vendor, Arawak Cay

“You would think that they would continue to renovate to bring that up. It is supposed to be warranted or needed, but we still have a hospital there that they spent thousands and thousands of dollars on to renovate and did not finish.”

Some are even saying that the new specialty hospital will play a role in their decision-making at the polls.

Hervé Swaby – Manager, Juicin 4 Life

“Do you think that this will affect your vote in the upcoming election? Yes, because I believe you handle the situations you have at hand before you go on to build more. Deal with the problems you face now before you create the possibility for more problems.”
