23% Increase in Crimes Against Persons

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – 2022 was a record year for major crimes with a nearly 25 percent increase in serious crimes. Police Commissioner Clayton Fernander revealing the numbers, Friday.

Speaking at a media press briefing, Fernander says the murder count reached a staggering 128, which was an 8 percent increase when compared to 2021.

He gave a breakdown of the number of murders, by island:

  • 113 in New Providence
  • 8 Grand Bahama
  • 4 Abaco
  • 1 Andros
  • 1 Eleuthera
  • 1 Exuma

Fernander says in most instances killers have studied the daily routine of their victims before committing the crime.

Despite the alarming numbers, the Police Commissioner is boasting of a 69 percent solvency rate for the year, with 86 of the incidents solved.

2022 also saw 555 armed robberies or a 34 percent increase over 2021. He said 14 of these incidents involved tourists.

The top cop saying research reveals suspects and victims of violent crimes are young men between 18 and 35. He added that in some instances, parents are not paying attention to their children.
