ELEUTHERA, BAHAMAS – The construction of a clinic in Palmetto Point, Eleuthera is a beacon of hope for residents on that island. A nurse stationed there says it will boost healthcare for Eleutherans.

Government broke ground October on the $8.8 million dollar project last year.

Since then, work has started. Drone footage captured by Our News shows how much work has been done.

Nurse Kenria Cargil has been assigned to Eleuthera the past 5 years. She says it’s a big deal for them.

Well, right now, we have a like a population explosion sold a lot of supplies needed new clinics. I need it because a lot of our clinic sell like well houses that they turn into clinics so right now we need new facilities.

Cargill says the new facility comes at a time where healthcare workers have had challenges, especially with emergencies.

On the island, you know you’re on call 24/7, so you really don’t go home. Go home, but you don’t go home because fast as you reach home, you get a call. Like I said road traffic, that’s one of the main, main concerns. You have a lot of hypertensive, diabetic crisis and stuff like that, asthmatics, a lot of that, seizures. Yes, they’re the main areas where we see a lot of on-call cases.

Healthcare on Family Islands has remained a challenge for successive governments over the years, and even with the construction of new facilities, there’s also a need for better medical equipment.

Because we have a lot of our patients that have to fly to Nassau for basic things like x-rays. We have the private clinics coming in now with x-rays and ultrasounds but we need like CAT scans and MRIs, stuff like that. Because operations have to spend so much money plane tickets going to Nassau. They have to find some place to stay if they don’t have relatives.
