Freeport Fashion Week Set To Showcase Local Talent

GRAND BAHAMA, BAHAMAS – Freeport Fashion Week and Rip the Runway are two major fashion events being held in honor of the Grand Bahama Port Authority’s 70th anniversary.

The three-day event kicks off on March 14th at The Stoned Crab Restaurant with an opening night fashion show. On Saturday, March 15th, a fashion talk and beauty showcase will be held, and the grand finale takes place on Sunday, March 16th, at the Grand Lucayan Ballroom, where designers will compete.

Chairman of Freeport Fashion Week, Fatima Zahra Kaboub, says this event is not just about fashion.

“But it’s also for us, it’s a way of displaying our talent in Grand Bahama, be that designers, be that hair specialists, hairdressers, beauticians, models, accessory designers. This is a platform for you. This is what we’re gonna be showcasing for the whole Grand Bahama, for the whole world to see, really, because now with social media, it’s impossible to hide.”

Participating designers have been challenged to create unique straw dolls as part of the showcase. The chairman is encouraging residents to attend and says Sunday is the big event.

“If it’s the Rip the Runway competition, which is a designer competition, each designer was asked to present a couple of pieces to compete in a very special event, which is ‘Reimagine the Bazaar.’ So it’s going to be really, really interesting, and I’m really looking forward to seeing that.

This year, particularly, Freeport Fashion Week, it’s our second year. Last year was special because it was our first one, and we were walking slightly in the dark until D-day. It was probably one of the most incredible events we’ve had in Grand Bahama for the last 20 years. But this year is going to be even better.”

Human Resources Director at the GBPA, Dr. Telina Smith, says the GBPA is excited to support the initiative.
