Slain Reserve Officer Was A Staple In His Church And Community

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Reserve Inspector Lernex Williams was not only well-loved by his family, but also by his community and his church family.

“He’s well-known, well-respected, well-loved and it would be difficult, but we have a group of younger men who are willing to step in and fill that void,” Rolle said.

The tragic killing of Reserve Inspector Lernex Williams is hitting hard for his church family and the community whom he served.

Williams served as President of the Anglican Church Men’s Group at St. Mary the Virgin Anglican Church, and according to Rolle, his presence was felt from he joined the group.

Additionally, Rolle says that Williams had been serving as president since February.

“He became president in February of this year at our election, which is four short months, but we felt the impact on his decision-making, his drive for new initiatives, and he will be missed greatly,” Rolle said.

Williams was shot and killed at the Royal Bank of Canada Sunday morning when he was ambushed by a group of men while depositing money.

On the scene, Police Commissioner Shanta Knowles told us that there was an exchange of gunfire resulting in two of the the men being shot.

However, around four men left the scene in a small, white vehicle shortly after the shooting.

Today, members from the ACM group gathered at his family home today, where they reflected on his contribution to the church.

“Hardworking, dedicated, committed person. Anything you asked Lernex to do, he gets it done. You don’t have to ask him, he would [just] do. He was committed to his church,” Foster said.

“…I admired him…quiet, but strong, and there was nothing that you could’ve asked for him to assist with that he [would give] you a negative answer, Dean said.

The Chippingham and Ft. Charlotte community are also being hit hard by the death.

While visiting Williams’ family today, Member of Parliament for the area, Alfed Sears, called Williams’ family one of the foundational families in that community.

“I saw how he took care, support his mum, [and] also his aunt who lived to be over 100. I mean this is a solid solid family, his siblings, his aunt, and the entire extended family…a very close family. This loss goes right to the heart of our community, Sears said.
