Nato Meets Amid Calls For Europe To Triple Military Spending

NETHERLANDS- The North Atlantic Treaty Organization, or NATO, has opened a pivotal summit in the Netherlands focused on strengthening collective defense across Europe.

The meeting follows growing pressure from the United States for allied nations to boost military spending to 5 percent of their gross domestic product.

In 2023, the U.S. accounted for 62 percent of NATO’s total defense spending and is now calling for greater European support in light of ongoing threats like Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the recent Iran-Israel escalation.

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte backed the proposal, calling it a “historic leap,” and noted that it would boost the alliance’s air defense capabilities fivefold.
