HR Executive To New Grads: Experience And Character Still Matters

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Youth unemployment hits 19% as employers prioritize experience and fit over degrees; over 12,000 have stopped job hunting.

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Nearly 8,000 young people between the ages of 15 and 24 are currently unemployed, pushing the youth unemployment rate to 19% in the second quarter of 2024, according to preliminary data from the National Statistical Institute’s Labour Force Survey.

The report also highlights an education-employment gap: 12% of unemployed individuals have university degrees, while 28% only completed high school.

And while more degree holders are advocating for higher pay, Human Resources Executive Nekishana Sutherland says employers are still focused on two key questions: Can you do the job? And will you fit in with our team?

“Some don’t realize that even with a degree, you still need experience. Employers often prefer someone with hands-on skills over someone with just academic credentials asking for a bigger salary.”

Sutherland adds that qualifications alone won’t seal the deal, employers are increasingly assessing a candidate’s character and cultural fit for long-term success.

Another red flag in the survey? Over 12,000 Bahamians are considered discouraged workers, people who have given up entirely on looking for jobs.

So what’s the game plan for graduates?

Experts say building soft skills like communication, adaptability, and teamwork is key. Even short internships or volunteer roles can help candidates stand out when it’s time to negotiate offers.

Because while a degree may open the door, experience, attitude, and adaptability are what get you hired, and help you thrive.
