Family Speaks Out After $3.6 Medical Malpractice Verdict Against Doctor

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – A family is speaking out after a Supreme Court judge awarded them $3.6 million after their now 12-year-old child sustained traumatic brain injuries during birth.

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – It was supposed to be one of the happiest moments of a young couple’s lives at the Princess Margaret Hospital, the birth of their first child.

However, what happened in the delivery room on August 5, 2012 was far from a dream, it quickly became a nightmare that would be played out in the legal system for years.

Their ordeal was revealed in a court ruling that we reported on earlier this week.

A Supreme Court judge awarded $3.6 million a family after their child sustained traumatic brain injuries during birth leaving him “in a near vegetative state”.

Last Thursday, Justice Loren Klein found that Dr. Gregory Carey was responsible for brain damage that the baby, now 12 years old, suffered due to lack of oxygen and blood flow to the brain before his delivery in August 2012.

Carey, who has delivered more than 1,000 babies during his 30-year practice, denied negligence and blamed genetics for the child’s condition.

We spoke with the boy’s parents today, but they wanted to remain anonymous to protect their privacy.

The mom and dad told us they knew something was wrong from the delivery room.

Father –

“[I] did voice my opinions that hey you need to hurry up, my wife is really exhausted, tired. You need to hurry get my son out,” he said.

From his younger sister to his grandmother, it’s a burden the whole family has to take in.

Their son suffers from Cerebral Palsy and seizures.

Mother –

“I would not put him in a school, I would not risk him being taken advantage of because he cannot speak up for himself,” she said.

Additionally, according to the mother, helping their son get the treatment he needs has also been costly.

“At one point his medication was up to $1500 dollars a month, we had to pay a courier to fly in his medication because the local pharmacies did not carry it,” she said.

While they do believe justice has been served, the family also says they’ve heard of similar cases where others didn’t get the same results.
