NASSAU, BAHAMAS – A late evening crash on Carmichael Road leaves a motorcyclist dead and raises serious concerns about speeding and road safety. Eyewitnesses say the impact was sudden and fatal.

Andy Green – witness
“When I was coming down the car, the bike was going this way. The car, he didn’t expect the car to turn when the car turned. That was it. That was it. And what you heard, brown? I stopped. Look.”

That was the account from resident Andy Green, who says he watched the crash unfold right in front of him Friday evening along Carmichael Road near Edmonton Road.

The fatal accident occurred shortly before 7 p.m.

Police say a Nissan Cube traveling east on Carmichael attempted to make a left turn when the vehicle collided with a motorcycle that was heading west.

Coran Jennings – Superintendent of police, Traffic Division, RBPF
“He sustained, uh, bodily injuries. Um, at this time I could say speed may have been a factor, uh, due to the damages to the both vehicles, the motorcycle and, uh, the Nissan Cube.”

Police say the victim, believed to be in his mid-thirties, was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. However, that alone wasn’t enough to prevent a fatal outcome.

Longtime motorcyclist Craig Powell, who happened to be near the scene, says the tragedy hits close to home.

Craig Powell – Motorcyclist
“It’s depressing that somebody should get killed on a motorcycle just as much as anybody getting killed, um, in a car, I guess. But, um, it’s still, for me, it’s really, um, it’s chilling because that, that possibility extends to me real quick.”

Officers are again making this appeal…

Coran Jennings – Superintendent of police, Traffic Division, RBPF
“What I would like to admonish the public to do is to obey the speed limit and drive with care and attention.”
