Parents: VAT Free Holiday Provides Much Needed Relief

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – The Bahamas’ VAT holiday, running August 10–September 6, removes taxes on school supplies, clothing, and accessories. Parents say it saves money, reduces stress, and encourages local shopping, with some planning purchases early and others waiting for the discount.

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – With the new school year just days away, the back-to-school rush is in full swing.

Fortunately for parents, the government has brought back its VAT holiday, removing taxes on school supplies, clothing, and other essentials.

John Williams, Communications Director at the Department of Inland Revenue, says the holiday gives Bahamians a chance to shop locally while saving money.

Parents like David Gardiner, who traveled from Abaco to New Providence, are taking advantage.
“We found school bags, tights, singlets, everything we needed. It was much easier and less stressful,” he said.

Others, like Timothy Bain, wait specifically for the VAT holiday to stretch their budget.
“Even with the lines, I got what I needed in about 15 minutes. It really helps save coins,” Bain shared.

Some parents start early to avoid the crowds. Ashley Penn-Nixon says, “It’s been easy. I went early and didn’t encounter any backups.” Similarly, Quinton Johnson noted, “I shop as soon as school closes, so I know exactly where to go.”

The VAT holiday began August 10 and runs through September 6, covering school supplies, clothing, bags, computers, accessories, and more.

Parents agree the savings make a real difference.
“You can get more for your money,” said Gardiner. Bain added, “I’ve saved about $50–$60. The wait may be long, but it’s worth it for your pocket.”
