NASSAU, BAHAMAS – In it’s 22nd year, the Providence Storm basketball tournament continues to be one of the top local showcases for high school basketball.

The tournament will take place from the 27rd to the 30th of December and coach Kevin Johnson says he’s looking forward to seeing what the visiting schools bring to the court.

VJ Edgecombe and his Philadelphia 76ers logged a big 116-107 win over the New York Knicks.

Playing for the first time as an NBA player in the famed Madison Square Garden, the combo guard from Bimini went off to the tune of 23 points, 3 rebounds, 4 assists, and 2 steals. His points came on 10-18 shooting, and he kept the floor open for his teammates, making 3 of his 6 attempts from long range. On top of all that, he showed his elite two-way potential, holding Knicks All-Star point guard Jalen Brunson to 1-10 shooting when he guarded him while scoring clutch buckets to put the game away.

Tyrese Maxey had 30 points and 9 assists in the win.

Over in college, the Bahamian duo of Rhema Collins and Denika Lightbourne led their FIU Panthers to a 78-61 win over Youngstown State.

Collins had 28 points, 12 rebounds and 4 steals, leading the team in those categories, and Lightbourne had 12 and 4 rebounds off the bench.

Collins and Lightbourne got off to a rough start early on, losing three of their first four games, but they got the panthers on track, winning 5 straight games.

Collins has been a revelation for FIU. The junior forward from New Providence spent her first two years with the Ole Miss Rebels, playing sparingly and averaging less than two points per game under coach Yolett McCuin.

But she’s found new life in Miami where she’s dropping a conference leading 20 points a game to go with 10 rebounds, good for 2nd in the league.
