Education Community Mourns Beloved Teacher Kachara Marshall

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Family members, colleagues, and former students filled the Ministry of Education on Monday for a memorial service, honoring the life and legacy of educator Kachara Marshall.

Marshall was former English teacher who rose to become senior mistress at L.W. Young Junior High School, and also became Subject Secretary for English, mentoring countless students along the way.

D’Meteria Smith of the Bahamas Union of Teachers’ Status of Women Committee and friend says Marshall was passionate about empowering young women.

“ She believed that every girl deserved the chance to dream boldly, and every woman deserved the opportunity to lead confidently. She fought with us for equity uplift. Voices too often unheard and gave of herself, her time, her talents, and her resources.”

Marshall a seemingly healthy woman, died on March 3rd at the Princess Margaret Hospital after having breathing problems.

Friends also reflected on her vibrant personality and the joy she brought to those around her.

Dr. Kadian Hanson-Wells of the Ladies of Caliber Organization described Marshall as someone who lived life with passion, style and generosity.

“ What made Chara truly extraordinary though, was the depth of her love and care for others. She was not just a friend, she was family. She was a pillar of support, not only for us, but also for our children. To her, she was more than a godmother to our godchildren, she was a constant source of encouragement, kindness, and love.”

Those who knew her say, Marshall poured her heart into her students, organizing spelling bees, debate competitions, and gymnastics programs.

Education Minister Glenys Hanna-Martin told mourners that Marshall’s work in the national education system will have a lasting impact.

“ She was a public servant in the truest sense. Upon request, she provided helpful BJC Language Arts examination material to teachers in both government and private schools, ensuring that no educator who sought her help was left without the tools they needed. She contributed to the academic rigor of our syllabus by reviewing textbooks for possible inclusion.”

Words of comfort and encouragement also came from Archdeacon Keith Cartwright.

“ I know that most of you will say, as I have said, that Chara gone too soon, but I am comforted with old people saying only the good die young.”
