NASSAU, BAHAMAS – The Bahamas Christian Council held its first press conference on Friday since the election of its new president, Mario Moxey.

On the sidelines, we asked Moxey about a number of social issues impacting the country, including the recent uptick in suicides in the Bahamas.

The latest incident involved a man in his early 40s who was found hanging earlier last week.

Moxey says the council plans to form special committees aimed at investigating the root causes of these tragedies and providing support to families.

“We see these families on an ongoing basis and understand the weight that they carry. So this is something that is near and dear to our hearts. When our citizenry hurt, we hurt as well. We’re in the foxhole with them, we’re in that space with them, we’re crying with them. We bury the loved ones.”

“And so this is something that we definitely wanna get ahead of and come up with some strong recommendations. And like I said, those recommendations are not only for the government, they’re also for local churches as well as families.”

There was recent arrest of a man who was accused of molesting a 5-year-old boy and was also known to the family. So we asked Moxey, how a how should communities respond in cases where trust is broken by those closest to us.

“You know, the church work is never undone. Every single day we’re with families who are dealing with issues like this and walking them through the process. And that is again another area that we’re seeking to form a select committee. We’re really interested in trying to figure out not only the root causes of these things, but also how can we stand in the gap for our country.”

Then, with the general election approaching, we also asked about one of the most debated issues in the country – the possibility of a national lottery, where Moxey made it clear the Christian Council’s position has not changed.

“The council position hasn’t changed on the Gaming Referendum. The council was very much involved in the process of standing against it and still stands today against number houses in this country as well as the national lottery.”

Moxey says the council hopes to play a more active role in addressing social challenges facing the country, while continuing to advocate for what it believes are moral and family based solutions.
