Young GB Woman Needs Assistance as She Battles Lifelong Medical Condition

GRAND BAHAMA – A Grand Bahama mother is speaking out as she continues to care for her 20-year-old daughter, who has been fighting a serious medical condition since birth.

After years of surgeries, hospital visits and daily challenges, the family is now faced with another struggle — the growing financial burden of care.

They’re sharing their story and appealing to the community for help.

At just 20 years old, Megan Higgs has spent her entire life battling hydrocephalus, a condition commonly known as fluid on the brain.

Diagnosed at birth, Megan underwent surgery to have a VP shunt inserted — a device that helps drain excess fluid and reduce pressure on the brain.

Her mother, Kendith Higgs, remembers being told that her daughter’s future was uncertain, as doctors expected Megan would live only two or three years.

And the shunt that helps keep her alive has had to be replaced multiple times.

And while the medical challenges have been numerous, the day-to-day reality for Megan can be just as difficult.

But now, the financial strain is becoming overwhelming.

Her mother says their health insurance coverage has been exhausted, leaving them dependent on assistance from the Department of Social Services and the kindness of others.

The responsibility of caring for Megan has also forced her mother to take a leave of absence since July of last year.

Despite the many obstacles she faces, Megan has not given up on her dreams.

The Higgs family is asking for the community’s support as they continue this journey.
