Distressed Resident: “It Was No Accident; It Was Intentional”

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – What began as a normal work day quickly turned into a nightmare for Angela Chereus, who says she received a phone call no one ever wants to get – her home was on fire.

Rushing from work to the scene, she arrived to find flames tearing through the apartment building and everything she owned up in smoke.

“See, I got a call from one of my neighbors saying that the apartment is on fire, so I rushed from work and I speeded up, so by the time I got here, the whole building on top was actually burning down.”

“And then when I tried to run to like to go into my place to get my stuff, they wouldn’t allow me to get through, so I had to stand on the sideline and just watch the building burn down.”

She was unable to do anything but watch from a distance. Memories, personal belongings and important documents were destroyed in a matter of minutes.

While thankful that neighbors were able to safely remove her nieces and nephews from the apartment, she says the reality of losing everything has left her heartbroken and unsure of where to turn next.

“To get like a phone call saying that your house is getting burned down is very heartbroken. And then what hurt me the most is that all my documents, my paperwork is in my apartment and they are all ruined, so it’s like I have to start all over. I need the help. I don’t have nowhere to stay. I don’t know who I could call on.”

Now faced with starting over, Cherelus says she has nowhere to stay, and is depending on the support of others as she tries to rebuild her life.

She also believes the fire was no accident.

“It was no accident, it was intentional.”

“And I know I can’t call no names, but we know who are the culprits, who did it. So right now they are in police custody. She’s in the truck right now.”

We attempted get police response to the allegations, but officers declined to comment.
