Hield Trade Creates New Bahamian NBA Showdowns

UNITED STATES – The 2026-27 NBA season will feature several regular-season matchups between the three Bahamian players in the league – Buddy Hield, Deandre Ayton and VJ Edgecombe.

Meanwhile those matchups look a little different after Hield was traded from Atlanta to the Charlotte Hornets.

Hield and Ayton will meet four times, starting October 26 in Charlotte, followed by a meeting in Washington four days later on October 30.

They will meet again November 30 in Charlotte and December 12 in Washington.

Hield will also face VJ Edgecombe four times, starting October 31 when Philadelphia visits Charlotte.

The 76ers return to Charlotte December 21, before the Hornets visit Philadelphia March 3 and April 11.

That leaves three meetings between Ayton and Edgecombe, January 12 in Philadelphia, March 18 in Washington and April 2 in Washington.

That creates a busy opening to the head-to-head schedule, with three straight games featuring Bahamian players between October 26 and October 31.

For Hield, it will be his first season in Charlotte after Atlanta sent him and Ryan Nembhard to the Hornets for Dorian Finney-Smith.

For Edgecombe, it will be his second NBA season after his rookie campaign in Philadelphia, while Ayton enters his first season with Washington.

By the time the regular season wraps up in April, the three Bahamian stars will have had 11 opportunities to go head-to-head.

Mingoes Battle Back for Season-opening Draw

The University of The Bahamas Mingoes opened their 2026-27 men’s soccer season with a two-two draw against millennia Atlantic university in Doral, Florida.

Samora Saunders and Keno Thomas each found the net for UB, as the Mingoes battled back from two one down.

Saunders tied the match in the 27th minute after rodain lamour jr. Set him up on a breakaway.

After millennia retook the lead before halftime, Thomas provided the equalizer in the 67th minute off a pass from nahum Johnson.

UB Head Coach Alex Thompson said the result shows the growth of a squad that has struggled against millennia in the past.

Goalkeeper Ahmad Smith also turned in a strong performance, helping the Mingoes keep millennia off the scoresheet in the second half.

UB now turns its attention to Trinity College of Florida, with that match set for Saturday morning in Coral Springs.

Souza Qualifies for Return to CDIW-Mexico

Bahamian Dressage Rider Gabriela Souza has qualified for a return to CDIW-Mexico after earning the final qualifying score she needed in New York.

The 14-year-old Souza needed four scores of at least 68% in the FEI children’s tests, and her 68.3% score at the hits open completed that requirement.

Riding her horse, gitano CCXIX, she also finished the event with two first-place results and a second-place finish.

Souza will now represent The Bahamas as an individual at the October 23rd through 26th competition in Lerma, Mexico.

She became the first Bahamian to compete in FEI Dressage at the event last year, winning an individual bronze and a gold medal in the mixed-nation team competition.

This time, she’s heading back, not by invitation, but by qualification.
