GRAND BAHAMA, BAHAMAS – It’s a vexing issue in Grand Bahama for many residents, especially those who frequent The Fishing Hole Road Causeway linking West Grand Bahama to the city of Freeport.

Over the weekend, several accidents caused the road to become backed up, prompting officials to reopen the former road to alleviate traffic.

Videos of the conditions went viral over the weekend, showing accident after accident, on the Fishing Hole Road Causeway.

Some residents claim their cars slide on the road following wet weather, without speed being a factor.

Work crews could be seen with Troy Mcintosh, Deputy Director and City Manager at the Grand Bahama Port Authority, Wednesday morning, assessing the situation.

McIntosh confirmed the GBPA met with the Ministries of Works and Grand Bahama Wednesday afternoon on the way forward.

He says the Ministry of Works agreed that traffic will be diverted to the former road until teams can be mobilized out of Nassau to assess the causeway and correct any issues that may be responsible for the causeway crashes.

The city manager says the GBPA is currently making repairs to the former road to make it accessible to the public.

The Ministry of Grand Bahama also releasing a statement Wednesday afternoon, confirming the bridge will be closed today for emergency engineering remediation to the causeway.

The proposed works are expected to take place in less than two months.
