Woman Gets Reduced Sentence for Acid Attack

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – A woman who disfigured her ex-boyfriend’s new girlfriend in an acid attack will be freed from prison earlier after the Court of Appeal reduced her sentence from seven to three years.

Twenty-five-year-old Darshenique Gibson was convicted of causing grievous harm to Cynclair Mackey in February 2022.

Mackey was at her job at KC’s Bar on East Street when Gibson threw the acid on her upper body, causing serious injuries.

The Court of Appeal agreed with defense lawyer Ryszard Humes’ submission that the magistrate erred by imposing a maximum sentence on Gibson, although it was her first offense.

However, Justice of Appeal Roy Jones noted that Gibson took the acid to her victim’s job with the intent to cause injury.

He said, “This was not done in a heated fight, but was a calculated act. Courts must send a message that this type of behavior is unacceptable in this society. It is for this reason that a prison sentence is appropriate in this case. It is clear, however that the imposition of the maximum of seven years was not the appropriate response to meet the justice of this case.”
