NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Outspoken advocate and Coalition of Independents Leader Lincoln Bain calling on the official Opposition to do more in the immigration fight, adding that the move to form a select committee to address the matter would not have helped the problem.

Days after a push for a select committee on immigration was shot down, Bain is calling the official opposition’s efforts weak.

On Monday the House of Assembly debated a motion to form a select committee on immigration, however, it was overwhelmingly shot down with the government voting against it.

The motion was put forward by the official opposition.

But Bain says the Free National Movement’s efforts are lacking.

The COI leader pulled no punches in expressing his displeasure with the country’s immigration challenges even terming it a crisis.

He has held a number of protests on the matter, the most recent ending in the arrest of 17 of his members.

He said while select committees have been successful in other jurisdictions, the same could not be said locally.

Speaking in Parliament Monday, Prime Minister Philip Davis suggested a select committee would be a waste of parliamentary time, adding that his government’s methods are working, however, Bain is of a different view.
