Sixteen-Year-Old Wins GB Jr. Director of Tourism Job

GRAND BAHAMA – Grand Bahama has a new junior director of tourism. The 18th Annual Speech Competition was held recently in the second city and for the first time, a student from Grand Bahama Academy took home the top prize.

GRAND BAHAMA – Grand Bahama has a new junior director of tourism. The 18th Annual Speech Competition was held recently in the second city and for the first time, a student from Grand Bahama Academy took home the top prize.

Five students going head-to-head recently in the Junior Director of Tourism speech competition under the theme, “Cultivating the Spirit of Entrepreneurship through Community Tourism.” 

After all was said and done, 16-year-old Layla Leathen would emerge victorious.

Layla will compete in the national competition in New Providence on April 27th but for now, she says she’s looking forward to working at the local tourism office.  

Manager at Ministry of Tourism, Karenda Swain-Rolle says they are excited to welcome Layla. 

Grand Bahama Academy Principal Jervis Jeffrey, noting that Layla made history as the first student from that school to bring home the award.
