NASSAU, BAHAMAS – There are many factors that contribute to some contractors taking long with respect to school repairs.

A senior engineer in the Ministry of Works breaks down what can slow down the process and shared some challenges.

With school repairs expected to start in the coming weeks, there have been concerns that the repairs can sometimes take longer than expected.

As Chief Information Officer and Senior Engineer Harrison Lockhart explains there are many factors that contribute to why some projects may take longer than others.

Another challenge they sometimes run into is addressing the needs of schools in the Family Islands.

Lockhart says for some, a challenge can be transporting the necessary equipment to that island to ensure the work is done.

In her budget communication last year, Education Minister Glenys Hanna-Martin said $15 million was allocated for school repairs in the 2022/2023 fiscal year.

Lockhart says for some of the smaller islands there’s a challenge finding contractors there to do the work.
