Reparations Committee Chair: Reparations Discussion by PM Encouraging

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – After the prime minister spoke about the need for reparations at the Annual Reception for The Caribbean Council at the House of Lords in London on Wednesday, The Bahamas National Reparations Committee (BNRC) is weighing in.

Formed in 2013, the BNRC is a member of the larger CARICOM Reparations Committee, advocating for reparations.

BNRC Chair, Dr. Niambi Hall Campbell-Dean, says the prime minister’s efforts to start the conversation in London on Wednesday was encouraging.

But if reparations are granted, what is the best way for them to be utilized, and who do they go to?

The Trevelyan family, Dean speaks of made a public apology and pledged over $100,000 and other private donations to the people of Grenada earlier this year.

And Dean says these new kinds of reparations are fueling conversations about finding the most impactful avenues.

But a question that comes up in discussions about reparations, what amount would be enough to compensate for crimes against humanity? 

Dean says a starting point would be looking at the compensation the British government offered to former slave owner but that’s not all.
