GUYANA – Guyanese police have confirmed a 16-year-old schoolgirl who accused Guyana’s Local Government Minister Nigel Dharamlall of rape has stated that she no longer wishes to pursue the matter.

Assistant Commissioner Wendell Blanhum, Head of the Criminal Investigations Department released a statement saying the file is currently being prepared to be sent to the director of public prosecutions for further legal advice.

Dharamlall, who is an executive member of the ruling People’s Progressive Party, is being held on one million dollars bail and has openly refuted all allegations.

Police arrested the minister, who has now gone on leave to assist the investigation, when he appeared at the Brickdam police station with his lawyer last week Monday.
