COP: Suspect Evaded Police Before Murder-Suicide

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – The man who killed his girlfriend, then turned the gun on himself, was evading police before the murder-suicide on Saturday, according to Police Commissioner Paul Rolle, who says he was trying to have the suspect’s bail revoked.

Rolle says officers were looking for the victim’s fiancée after she called police to make a report of damage to a vehicle.

After initially telling OurNEWS that Heavenly Terveus made a report to the Grove police station, he later clarified that she declined to make an official report.

The 24-year-old man, who died in hospital last night, was on bail for shooting at his fiancée’s sister, and another woman, in a domestic incident.

The victim, identified by family as 21-year-old Heavenly Terveus, leaves behind a one-month-old baby.

Her killing ignited debate on social media about domestic violence, and protecting women who find themselves in abusive relationships.

Some criticized the police handling of domestic matters, saying that oftentimes police are reluctant to intervene because of a perception that many women go back to their abusers.

Rolle says it’s something they see in court cases where partners withdraw complaints. Still, he admits that officers need to always take those matters seriously.

Rolle says police received domestic violence sensitivity training last year, and it’s something he says must be ongoing. However, he thinks that police are unfairly blamed when some tragedies occur.
