ABACO, BAHAMAS – On this day in Bahamian history – In 2001, American R&B singer Aaliyah Dana Haughton died in a plane crash shortly after takeoff in Marsh Harbour, Abaco.

Her and eight other passengers were in Abaco to film her music video “Rock The Boat.”

Investigations revealed the Cessna 402b was overloaded.

A report of the accident revealed the pilot falsified his flight training hours in order to obtain a pilot license, with toxicology reports showing traces of alcohol and cocaine in his system.

Then on August 25th, 2017 – after the company announced it was closing, chaos erupted outside Pineapple Express as hundreds of angry customers who invested hundreds of dollars gathered to demand payments.

Police had to be called in to control the angry mob as some customers said they were owed at least $1,000.

Then in 2021 – health officials reported the deadliest month for COVID-19 related deaths. Official stats showed there were 52 recorded in August that year compared to 51 deaths in September 2020.

Finally in 2022, education officials reported less than 10% of students who sat national examinations got at least a ‘C’ or higher in three core subjects.
